This was the view from my front door when I picked up the newspaper this morning:

Every now and then it's good to be reminded that things are beautiful. It's a perfect, perfect hot day, the doves are cooing in the neighbour's tree and the pool is finally clean so there will be swimming this afternoon.
That will compensate (a bit) for today's major stupid mistake: I made an enormous pot of chicken stock on Sunday night from four carcasses that had been waiting in the freezer, and left it on the stove yesterday thinking I would get new freezer bag thingies today. Idiot. Just threw the stock -- which had been wonderful, aromatic, plan-inspiring stuff -- down the outside drain while holding my nose. Grrr.
