My mother-in-law found an English version of Lana Grossa's latest pattern magazine and showed it to me yesterday; I don't think I've stopped drooling yet. It is astonishing what good design can do for knitting; there just is no comparison between this stuff and the ten- or twenty-year-old plain vanilla sweater patterns commonly available. Having just completed my first voluntary knitting project in 30-odd years, is it too soon to try lace, do you think?

No, lace is easy! You just follow the pattern.
Hah, just what I was wanting to hear - thanks, Jesse! I'm starting to realise that the pleasure of mastering a new stitch or technique is at least as much part of the fun as the thrill of producing a finished object; so I see some occasionally over-ambitious projects in my future :-)
I agree with Jesse, you just have to follow the pattern and trust blindly that it will look right when you block it :P.
I've knitted lacey cardigans before, but soon I will attempt a lace stole (or 3). I expect it will be difficult at first but well worth it.
