Measuring out my life in tablespoons

Why do Americans insist on using such bizarre and arcane measurements in their recipes? I mean, ounces, for heaven's sake. But most of all, how the hell do you measure out butter by the tablespoon?

My experience is that butter in South Africa is really hard. At home I have no problems measuring butter with a tablespoon since the butter is a little softer and scoops out easier.

In the US, our butter comes in packages marked with tablespoon measurements -- you simply cut at the appropriate line and you're set. If it helps, a quarter-pound stick of butter contains eight tablespoons.

Thanks Ruth and dr! I never considered that our butter might be harder than elsewhere... I wonder what we do to it. Or don't do to it. Hmm.
